Frederick Arthur Beadsworth was born in Nottingham in 1899, youngest child of William Beadsworth and Esther nee Tansley. For an account of his family background see the entry for his brother Harry Beadsworth.
Frederick’s service records have not survived but he is entered on Medal and Award Rolls for WW1. These show he served with the 2/5th Battalion Royal Lancaster regiment and with the Leicestershire regiment. We do not know when he enlisted. As he was born late in 1899, he would not have been old enough to join the army in the first years of the war, unless like so many other boys he lied about his age.
The 2/5th was a territorial battalion formed at Lancaster in September 1914 as a 2nd line battalion. In April 1915 it transferred to the 170th (2nd North Lancs.) Brigade in the 57th (2nd West Lancashire) Division, eventually landing in France in February 1917. There is no known record showing when Frederick transferred into the Leicestershires, or which battalion he joined.
The Leicestershire Regiment website states that he re-enlisted into the regiment on 1st July 1920 and was discharged on 30 JUne1922.
