William John Aldwinckle was born in Leicester in1886, the only son of John Henry Aldwinckle and his wife Annie nee Muggleton. The couple also had a daughter. John Henry and his twin brother Vincent were born in Cottingham in 1860, the seventh and eight of the ten children of Bartholomew Bunckley Aldwinckle.

John Henry left for Leicester and was employed as a labourer in his youth. He married in 1885 and had set himself up as a grocer and beer seller by 1891. Subsequently he joined the Leicester police force, as had his Cottingham - born cousin John Edwin Aldwinckle, and was ranked sergeant in 1901. Ten years later he was retired on a police pension.

William John was a warehouseman in 1911, still living with his parents and sister but he later moved to London. He got married in 1916 in Islington. His military career was brief as he was not called up until June 1918 when he was thirty two, joining the Royal Marine Artillery as a gunner, 2nd class. Possibly the reason for the delay was his employment as a police constable. In any case he was demobilised early in the following January. He died in Lambeth in 1937.
